A New Kind of Institution for a Changing World
Founded to advance sustainable systems thinking across economic, environmental, government, and societal dimensions, The Institute bridges research, technology, and action.
Why The Institute Was Founded
Nonprofits, small businesses, and community organizations do essential work — yet many operate with fragmented tools, manual processes, and digital systems that weren't built for their needs. The gap is not only a funding problem. It is a technology problem.
Off-the-shelf enterprise software is built for large corporations. It doesn't account for the complexity of multilingual service delivery, volunteer management, or the impact reporting requirements of nonprofits and mission-driven businesses. These organizations end up stitching together spreadsheets, free tools, and outdated databases — spending more time on administration than on their actual work.
The Institute for Sustainable Systems was founded to close this gap. We design and build digital infrastructure for nonprofits, small and medium-sized businesses, community organizations, and public institutions — practical technology that helps organizations focus on what matters.
Our Mission
To build modern digital infrastructure for nonprofits, small and medium-sized businesses, community organizations, and public institutions — helping them operate more sustainably, scale their impact, and focus on the work that matters.
Our Vision
A nonprofit sector equipped with the same quality of digital tools as the private sector — where technology amplifies mission rather than obstructing it, and where every organization has the infrastructure to do its best work.
The Principles That Guide Us
Six core commitments shape how we work, what we prioritize, and how we engage with the world.
Mission-Aligned Technology
Every system we build is evaluated against the mission it serves. Technology is a means, not an end — and we never lose sight of that.
Equity by Design
We design systems that are accessible, inclusive, and that serve the communities who need them most — not just the organizations who are easiest to serve.
Built to Last
We build for sustainability, not dependency. Our goal is always to leave organizations with greater capacity than they had before.
Collaborative by Default
The best systems are built with the people who use them. We co-design with our partners, not just for them.
Canadian in Spirit
Rooted in the Canadian tradition of pluralism, civic engagement, and public-interest work — and committed to sharing what we learn internationally.
Responsible Innovation
We approach AI and emerging technology with care — prioritizing ethical use, data privacy, and tools that genuinely serve the communities they affect.
Building a research community.
We are actively connecting with researchers, policy experts, and practitioners who share our commitment to sustainable systems. Our goal is to build a collaborative think tank that brings together diverse expertise across our four system dimensions.
Researchers & Academics
We are seeking researchers working on sustainable systems, AI governance, environmental policy, civic technology, and related fields to join our growing network.
Practitioners & Technologists
We welcome technologists, systems designers, and practitioners with experience building infrastructure for nonprofits, public institutions, and communities.
Policy Experts & Advisors
We are building relationships with policy experts and institutional advisors who can help shape our research agenda and connect our work to real-world application.
How The Institute Is Governed
As a registered Canadian not-for-profit, The Institute operates under an independent board of directors with strong accountability and transparency standards.
Let's build sustainable systems together.
Whether you are a nonprofit, a small business, a community organization, or a public institution — we want to work with you.
