Our research program produces evidence-based analysis to inform policy, practice, and public understanding of the interconnected systems challenges of the AI era.
A Research Program Under Development
The Institute for Sustainable Systems is newly established. Our research program is currently being designed and will grow as the institute builds its team, partnerships, and foundational infrastructure.
Our research agenda is distinguished by its commitment to integrated analysis. Rather than treating economic, environmental, governmental, and societal systems as separate fields, we seek out the connections, contradictions, and convergences across them — producing work that is more useful than any single-domain approach.
We plan to collaborate with universities, think tanks, government agencies, and community organizations to ensure our work is both academically rigorous and practically grounded. We are actively seeking founding research collaborators.

AI & Sustainable Systems
We examine how AI technologies intersect with sustainable systems design — exploring governance frameworks, ethical deployment, and the role of AI in building more resilient institutions and communities.
Environmental Systems
Our environmental research explores the intersection of ecological systems, economic development, and community resilience, with particular attention to Indigenous and Northern communities.
Civic Technology
We study how technology can strengthen civic participation, improve access to public services, and reduce friction between individuals and the institutions designed to serve them.
Nonprofit Digital Transformation
Research into how civil society organizations can adopt digital tools, AI systems, and modern organizational practices to increase their effectiveness and reach.
Systems Infrastructure
We analyze the foundational infrastructure layers — digital, institutional, and governance — that enable sustainable systems to function at scale across economic, environmental, government, and societal dimensions.
Public Policy and Governance
Cross-cutting policy research on the governance dimensions of sustainable systems, technology infrastructure, and civil society development at multiple scales of government.
